NOCTURA JOURNAL / STRATEGY

A better website starts with a clearer brief

Turn a broad idea into a shared direction with a few thoughtful questions before design and development begin.

THE TAKEAWAY

A useful brief doesn’t need to be long. It needs to explain who the website serves and what they should be able to do.

01

Start with the outcome

Before counting pages, write down one primary goal: helping customers request a quote, book a service, or understand a complex product. Identify the people visiting and the questions they bring. This gives the team a way to prioritize content and decide which features can wait for a later release.

02

Bring content and meaningful references

Gather your logo, service information, product images, and confirmed contact details. For reference websites, describe what you like: the navigation, storytelling, or purchase flow. Specific observations are easier to act on than a general request to make something modern. They also help distinguish visual preferences from functional requirements.

03

Define the first release

Separate launch requirements from later improvements. Note existing systems, content owners, the person approving work, and your preferred timeline. If the budget is still open, start with a smaller scope that achieves the primary goal. Ask the team to explain the options and tradeoffs before committing to additional features.
